Pubs set to become too expensive to go to, warns brewer Adnams as value of dwelling crunch hits earnings

Southwold brewer Adnams has mentioned that the difficult financial atmosphere is hurting pubs and mentioned greater costs may quickly make a go to too expensive.

It made a pre-tax lack of £1million within the six months to June 30, considerably narrowing the £3.3million loss posted a 12 months in the past.

Lower-than-expected beer gross sales in June contributed to a subdued market, Adnams mentioned, because the Queen’s Jubilee ‘turned out not to be the wonderful on-trade event everybody was hoping for’.

A comparatively giant consumption of power, water and uncooked supplies means it has been affected by rising costs.

Chairman Jonathan Adnams mentioned: ‘This situation is the last thing our industry needed after the previous two years.

‘We are highly conscious as to how much cost can realistically be passed directly to the customer before a visit to the pub becomes too expensive.’
