Harun Maruf has been a journalist for nearly 30 years. He was a founding member of the independent Somali media that arose following the fall of the authoritarian government in 1991.

He previously worked for the Associated Press and the BBC as a Somalia correspondent. Harun has been the VOA Somali editor for the longest time, from July 2008 to the present, only eight months after joining the service.

He has launched hard-hitting programming on the VOA Somali channel, including investigative reporting and series, in addition to his duties as editor-in-chief. In March 2018, he launched The Investigative Dossier, a groundbreaking fortnightly investigative program that was the first of its kind in Somali media. Harlan called it the best piece of journalism he’d ever seen.

His work had an impact on Somali government policy.

Harlan and VOA colleague Dan Joseph published their first book in October 2018.

Inside Al Shabab: The Secret History of Al Qaeda’s Most Powerful Ally tells the story of the militant group’s desire to destabilize Somalia’s government and turn the country into a safe haven for terrorists. The book was well received both in Somalia and around the world.

Harun graduated from City University London with an MA in International Journalism.
