According to, the explicit photos of the University of Wisconsin women’s volleyball team that were leaked online came from one of the players’ phones.

According to the University of Wisconsin Police, the player is not under suspicion and does not know how the photos ended up online, but they are investigating whether her cell phone was hacked.

“We’re looking into what happened and who may have shared these photos,” said Marc Lovicott, the department’s executive director of communications, to

“None of the players are under investigation, and we are investigating the possibility that one of their phones was hacked.”

Under Wisconsin law, it is illegal to share explicit photos without permission, so whoever shared the X-rated photos would have had to get permission from all 18 members of the 2021 National Championship winning team.

“This is a unique case because of the high profile of the girls involved, and our detectives are working on it as a priority,” said Lovicott.

“Our department has worked on similar cases before, but many of them involve people threatening to post intimate photos online—blackmail,” he added.

“Nothing of the sort is suspected in this case, and, once again, this case is unique due to the high profile of the players.”

The 40 photos and videos that were leaked online last week were taken after the Wisconsin Badgers won the National Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball national championships in December.

With a 3-2 win over Top Ten rival Nebraska, Wisconsin won the championship for the first time. Dana Rettke, the 2021 national player of the year, was in charge of the team.
