The family of Tire Nichols met with officials in Memphis, Tennessee, on Monday and viewed footage from his arrest earlier this month, giving them a chance to learn about what happened before he was taken to the hospital The situation was critical, and he died there a few days later.

The Memphis Police Department confirmed in a statement on Twitter that police and city officials met with Nichols’ family and showed them the video footage, which Chief Cerelyn Davis said would be released publicly at a later date.

“Transparency remains a top priority in this matter, and an early release could adversely affect the criminal investigation and trial,” she said. “We are working with prosecutors to determine the appropriate time to publicly release the footage.”

Benjamin Crupp, an attorney representing the Nichols family, said in a statement that the family will hold a news conference Monday afternoon.

The death of Nichols, a 29-year-old black man, followed a series of recent high-profile cases in which police used excessive force against members of the public, especially young black men.

The Memphis Police Department fired five officers, all black, in connection with Nichols’ death on Jan. 10, three days after officers stopped a driver identified as Nichols, the department said. , due to alleged reckless driving the day before.

A standoff ensued and “the suspect fled the scene on foot,” police said in a statement on social media. Police pursued and another confrontation ensued before the suspect was taken into custody, the statement said.

“The suspect then complained of shortness of breath and an ambulance was called to the scene. The suspect was taken to St. Francis Hospital in a critical condition,” officials said.

Nichols died a few days later, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The Justice Department and the FBI have also launched civil rights investigations.

Details of Nichols’ injuries and cause of death were not released. CNN has reached out to the Shelby County Coroner for comment.
