The VH1 cable TV network was started by Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment, which was a part of Warner Communications and the original owner of MTV.

The channel was created to capitalise on the success of sister channel MTV by focusing on the softer, lighter side of popular music and playing music videos aimed at a slightly older demographic than MTV.

Similar to MTV, VH1 eventually shifted its focus away from music videos and toward reality television programming. It started on January 1, 1985, with a video of Marvin Gaye singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Gaye had died a year before the network started.
